Moving Forward Using Backward Course Design: Alignment of Learning Outcomes, Assessment and Instructional Approaches

How will you approach planning or designing your next course? Many STEM instructors follow a common path—select a textbook, identify the chapters to be covered, develop lectures, and finally, create exams. The 2017-2018 Teaching Essentials Workshop Series will provide the skills and knowledge needed to try a different, more deliberate approach called Backward Design. Backward Design is a framework that emphasizes alignment of learning outcomes, assessments, and instructional activities.

Fall semester workshops focused on developing learning outcomes and assessments. Participants considered what students should be able to know, understand, and do after completing a course. They were also introduced to the fundamental principles that guide assessment of student learning and had the opportunity to develop new assessments.

Spring semester workshops introduced a variety of instructional approaches designed to help students achieve learning outcomes. Participants considered which approaches best align with their learning outcomes and the associated assessments. Finally, the series culminated with a workshop focused on using assessment results to guide changes in instructional and practices.
