Dear Colleagues,
Libraries, Computing and Technology (LCT) is in the process re-examining commercial Learning Management System (LMS) options to find a replacement for ANGEL, which will be unsupported by its vendor after October 2014. On February 6, 2012, several bids were received in response to the LMS request for proposal (RFP). The selection of MSU’s next LMS will be made by the LMS Futures Committee and LCT based on input regarding features, functionality, and strategic considerations (cost, licensing terms, etc.) as described in the RFP bids. The LMS Futures Committee will be comprised of representatives from each academic college appointed by college deans and LCT. Feedback from faculty, staff, and students during open public demonstrations will also be an important part of the final LMS decision. The MSU community is invited to attend the public demonstrations listed below, which will be presented by vendors of Blackboard and Desire2Learn.
(Two times are offered for each LMS demonstration, but the presentations will be the same.) BLACKBOARD PUBLIC DEMOS * Thursday, February 23, 2012, from 3:00-4:30 p.m., in Olds Hall - room 111 * Friday, February 24, 2012, from 8:30-10:00 a.m., in Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building - room 1415 DESIRE2LEARN PUBLIC DEMOS * Wednesday, February 29, 2012, from 3:00-4:30 p.m., in Natural Science Building - room 116 * Thursday, March 1, 2012, from 8:30-10:00 a.m., in Plant and Soil Sciences Building - room 1200 LCT aims to identify a viable LMS solution for MSU in spring 2012. More details are available at http://tech.msu.edu/lms-futures. Feedback on our strategy, processes, and the selection itself is welcome by calling (517) 355-2345 or (800) 500-1554 or e-mailing reachout@msu.edu. -- Brendan Guenther brendan@msu.edu Michigan State University Libraries, Computing & Technology Associate Director - Academic Technology Services Director - Virtual University Design & Technology

Introducing a new Faculty Learning Community: Trans-disciplinary Creativity in STEM Disciplines This is an invitation to faculty members in programs across MSU to participate in a newly formed Faculty Learning Community (FLC) related to the role of trans-disciplinary creativity in teaching and learning, particularly in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) disciplines. The setting up of this FLC is prompted by an understanding that traditional disciplinary boundaries are fast eroding and the kinds of disciplinary knowledge our students need to develop are changing as well. Specifically, we would seek to explore the role of the arts in enhancing learning in the STEM areas. These ideas of course have significant implications for the design of curricula in order to provide our students with skills and knowledge that allow them to move creatively and flexibly across disciplines. We see participants in the FLC as engaging in a conversation about these changes, to discuss and design course learning objectives to address these shifts. Furthermore, the FLC discussions can potentially lead to developing approaches that value both within and across disciplinary knowledge. The FLC would meet once a month at a mutually acceptable time (most probably in a brown-bag lunch format). The goals would be to develop faculty knowledge and expertise in this area, develop a bibliography of work in trans-disciplinary learning, and explore publication and grant getting opportunities. If you are interested in this, please send an email to Dr. Neeraj Buch ( buch@egr.msu.edu) by EOB on 9-Sept, 2011. Once the cohort is identified I will send out a doodle to set the meeting times. The first meeting of the group will be scheduled for the last week of September.
